Château L'Esparrou
Island Vineyard
The Roussillon vineyard is exposed to a demanding climate: Mediterranean par excellence, with its hot summers, mild autumns and winters and rain concentrated in autumn and spring.
One day out of two, the vineyard is swept by the Tramontane, a dry, dominant wind from the North which induces an exceptional state of health and makes it possible to reduce phytosanitary treatments.
It is marked by the uplift of the Pyrenees, which has shaped its relief by giving it a multitude of terroirs with very distinct characters. A diversity unique in the world.
At Château l'Esparrou, the vine has been cultivated for 800 years using natural elements. A rock resulting from the fragmentation of the Pyrenees washed up on the shores of the Mediterranean. The presence of the sea a few meters away is beneficial for the vines (sea inlets, sea wind). Château l'Esparrou is more than a vineyard, it is an artists' residence and was a source of inspiration for many artists, including Dufy, Cocteau, Picasso and Maillol.
